This month in music class, students are studying America's historic "work songs". The 3rd grade is focused on songs of railroad building. They have explored a few different songs, but the fan favorite is, "On the Railroad" covered by Colm McGuinness, an influencer from Ireland. Students spent time "analyzing" music to identify the 7 elements of music including texture (what instruments/voices are being used). In this song, there is a metallic sound happening but it didn't sound like traditional percussion instruments we are used to. Some guesses included chains, nails, pots & pans, and on. I told the students that I [Ms. Rice] would reach out to the singer/influencer on YouTube or through Instagram to see if he could answer our question. I also reminded students that we might not get a response but that it was worth a try. Colm McGuinness has more than 496k subscribers on YouTube and 600k on TikTok. The song we are studying has more than 1.1 million views on YouTube. Just like that, the message was sent and I got a response the next day. The students were thrilled to hear that he had responded at all and even more excited for the answer to our question: chains, forks and anvils! What a great adventure! #brillionlions
